One of the team's star riders, Frank Schleck, was banned from the sport for using the illegal diuretic Xipamide at last year's Tour de France, and there have been consistent rumours of missed salary payments across the team in recent months.

According to a release announcing the deal, Trek will look to conserve a large part of the existing team, retaining general manager Luca Guercilena. Trek has also confirmed it is in negotiations with 'several marquee athletes'.
